MIT’s culture is built on merit, problem-solving, and real-world results. We believe in progress driven by data, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence — and MIT always strives to be better.

MIT encourages excellence and the free exchange of ideas

Rigor in admissions and hiring
MIT was first to reinstate the SAT as a requirement for undergraduate applications and eliminated DEI statements in faculty hiring — steps that other universities have emulated.

Commitment to free speech
MIT is committed to free expression and diversity of thought because it understands that breakthrough ideas and discovery depend on these principles. In 2023, the faculty reaffirmed this long-standing commitment with a strong statement on free expression. Among her first acts at MIT, President Sally Kornbluth endorsed the statement.
MIT actively addresses discrimination and harassment

- In 2024, MIT took a number of steps to promote a campus environment free from harassment and discrimination, including strengthening rules on protests and demonstrations.
- We launched multiple programs combating bias and fostering community. And we communicated clear expectations to all students about responsible expression.
- Notably, a federal court dismissed the lawsuit filed against MIT on these issues.
MIT has taken steps to improve and accelerate its student disciplinary processes

Safe campus environment
MIT has continually improved its approach to making sure that campus operates smoothly and safely, and that everyone is able to pursue the work they came to MIT to do. MIT has introduced enhanced rules, implemented rapid response measures, and used administrative actions when appropriate.

Strong disciplinary actions
Disciplinary actions related to campus tensions stemming from the conflict in the Middle East have included probation, full suspensions, and/or bans from campus for students who violated campus rules.
Bottom Line
MIT fosters excellence through rigor, free expression, and a commitment to measurable progress.
